History of Tamil cinema
The cinema industry is growing vastly day by era. The first Tamil cinema was produced in the year 1916. The first stilly Tamil movie released was Keechaka Vaadham. Initially the movies produced were soundless movie where the audience can scene only the scenes there longing not be any audio for the flick picture show. Later in the year 1931 audio was introduced in the movies.
AVM studio is the first Tamil cinema production company. The company was started in the year 1930 in Coimbatore. Later the company shifted its base to Chennai. It is the oldest studio which is still functioning in the city.
The first theater which screened the silent movie in Chennai was Electric Theatre. The theatre was built by the British people. The theatre was built in annasalai. The theatre lasted for few years only. Now the building is a part of the post office complex.
Gaitey theatre was built in the year 1912 by R. Venkiah. It is one of the oldest theatres in the city which is still functioning.
The first commercial Tamil movie was released in the year 1948 named chandralekha. It was produced for a whooping cost of $600,000. This is still the highest budget for the Tamil cinema. The film was directed and produced by S. S. Vasan. The film was produced for over 5 years. The film became a flop. Later it was remaked into hindi.
Previously the budgets of the film were very low. In the past there were very less audience who go to theatres to watch the movies. Due to this the cost of production was less. Now a day the cost for producing the film has crossed cores of rupees due to the familiarity across the audience.
