Fine particulate matter from traffic may influence birth weight

March 8th, 2010 by lettercontexts

After the scientists had investigated the effects of the exposure of adults and children to particulate matter in the past, they are now essential focussing on the risks to unborn life in this just out study.

This is the continuation of the GSF’s successful cooperation with the internationally renowned French research institution, with the common objective of tracing the causes of environment-related health disorders.

For the study which has now been published online, data from the cohort study LISA were used, in which the influence of living conditions and behaviours on the development of the immune system and allergies is studied. 1016 mothers and their children born in Munich between 1998 and 1999 were studied. All women included in the study had not moved out during the pregnancy. On the basis of a measuring campaign at 40 locations in the city of Munich, the concentrations of traffic-related atmospheric pollutants during pregnancy, including fine particulate matter (those with a diameter of less than 2.5 micrometers, PM2,5), could be modelled at the home address of the pregnant women. The model took into account the distance of each home from streets, the population density near the home as well as the fluctuations in the concentration of the air pollutants over time during the pregnancies.

Using a detailed questionnaire, the study authors could disentangle the influence of air pollutants from that of other factors known to influence birth weight. In particular, maternal smoking, the height and weight of the mother before pregnancy, the educational level of the mothers as well as the duration of the pregnancy and the child’s gender could be controlled for.

The proportion of newborns with a birth weight below 3,000 grams increased with increasing concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM2,5) during pregnancy. A similar association was observed between the absorbance of fine particulate matter and birth weight. The absorbance of particulate matter is considered to be a marker of the particles originating from traffic, and in particular from diesel vehicles.

Earlier American Studies had already suggested that fine particulate matter might influence the birth weight. This recent study is the first study from Germany and Western Europe and also the first one to suggest so clearly that traffic-related air pollutants have an influence.

The biological mechanisms which could explain the influence of air pollutants on the growth of the unborn child are not known as yet. Fine particulate matter consists of hundreds of chemical substances. It is conceivable that a minor fraction of the fine particulate matter reaches the blood through the lungs and influences the placenta or other organs which are responsible for regulating the growth of the foetus. Studies from the US and Poland have for example shown that polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), which are produced during incomplete combustion processes, can reach the foetus and influence its growth.

52% Of U.S. Adults Are Dissatisfied With Health Insurance Costs, Study Finds

March 6th, 2010 by lettercontexts

Fifty-two percent of U.S. adults are dissatisfied with health guaranty costs, compared with 33% in 2005, according to the ninth annual Haleness Self-confidence Look at released on Tuesday by the Employee Help Research Institute, the Los Angeles Times reports. The telephone appraisal included responses from 1,000 adults and had a margin of error of plus or minus three percentage points (Alonso-Zaldivar, Los Angeles Times, 10/25). According to the survey, fewer than two in 10 U.S. residents said that they are satisfied with the fetch of health indemnity and with their out-of-pocket contributions by reason of be responsible for (AP/Arizona Daily Hero, 10/25). About 60% of respondents said that their health bond costs — which include premiums, deductibles and copayments — had increased in the olden times year and more than half said that they saved less as a result, the survey start (Los Angeles Times, 10/25). Among respondents who said that their healthfulness indemnification costs had increased, 36% said that they decreased retirement savings, compared with 25% in 2004, and 28% said that health insurance costs affected their faculties to pay for vital necessities this year, compared with 18% in 2004, the survey build (Gerencher, Dow Jones Firm News, 10/25).

Comments
According to Paul Fronstin, director of the health research and education program at EBRI, the survey indicates that adults would rather decrease their retirement savings than lose their health insurance. “We’ve always known when workers rank their benefits, health care ranks much higher than retirement benefits and that’s because people, when focusing on benefits, are focusing on what they need now rather than what they will need 20, 30, 40 years from now,” he said (Dow Jones Business News, 10/25). Fronstin cited the results of the recent Kaiser Family Foundation/ Health Research and Educational Trust Employer Health Benefits Survey which found that while health insurance premiums increased this year at the lowest rate since 2000, they still rose at double the rate of increase in workers’ earnings AP/Arizona Daily Star, 10/25). EBRI President Dallas Salisbury said, “Individuals are not seeing their real income go up because their employers are spending more on health care. And individuals themselves are spending more on health care” (Los Angeles Times, 10/25). Jerry Ripperger — director of consumer health for the Principal Financial Group, an underwriter of the survey — said, “Due to rising costs, Americans are falling behind in savings and struggling to handle even basic expenses, which over time has had a significant impact on their confidence in the health care system” (AP/Arizona Daily Star, 10/25).

The survey is available online. Note: You must have Adobe Acrobat Reader to view the survey.

Nationwide Vaccine and Treatment Units Strengthened and Expanded, US

March 4th, 2010 by lettercontexts

The Public Institute of Allergy and Catching Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health, has awarded eight contracts to strengthen and swell its nationwide group of institutions conducting clinical trials of promising candidate vaccines and therapies for the sake transmissible diseases. In supplement to increasing the number of sites from seven to eight, NIAID expects the Vaccine and Treatment Evaluation Units (VTEUs) to carry gone more clinical trials in larger populations and to safely test vaccines in express vulnerable populations, such as infants and the elderly. Moreover, all the VTEUs will have inpatient beds in behalf of isolating volunteers who participate in the testing of vaccines containing weakened versions of live microbes, making it easier to conduct such trials quickly.

Each VTEU will receive approaching $23.7 million over seven years. The combined capabilities of these research facilities — located in Atlanta, Baltimore, Cincinnati, Houston, Iowa City, Nashville, Seattle and St. Louis — will enhance NIAID’s ability to point clinical research to quickly respond to emerging public health needs.

“In more than four decades of fact-finding, the VTEUs have conducted hundreds of clinical trials of investigational vaccines and therapeutics for a variety of communicable diseases of public fettle concern, and many of these trials comprise contributed to the licensure of products,” says NIAID Director Anthony S. Fauci, M.D. “We expect this success to continue, as each VTEU has handicapped dexterity and experience in vaccinology and an stirring capacity to recruit volunteers from various populations in its community.”

Established in 1962, the VTEUs are a national resource allowing for regarding vaccine development. VTEU investigators participate in tested and advanced vaccines for the benefit of many diseases, including influenza, pneumonia, whooping cough, Haemophilus influenzae infection, cytomegalovirus infection, malaria, smallpox, anthrax and tularemia. Childhood vaccines and emulsion vaccines — the delivery of several vaccines through one inoculation — pull someone’s leg been and remain an important part of the VTEUs’ research goals. The first hardship of an palatable vaccine was conducted by VTEU researchers, and other novelette vaccine delivery systems make been extensively tested by this select band of medical research facilities. In search example, identical VTEU demonstrated that consuming genetically engineered potatoes could stimulate an untouched response against Escherichia coli in humans, and six VTEUs enrolled progeny children in a successful Phase III trial of FluMist, an influenza vaccine delivered through a nasal smooth.

An important reliability of the VTEUs is their ability to enroll large numbers of volunteers into trials rapidly and vaccinate them in a manner that is safe, effective and quick to yield results. This rapid-reply talent is especially important during testing vaccines designed to counteract emerging unrestricted health concerns. As model, the VTEUs conducted multiple studies in 2005 and 2006 of a vaccine appropriate for a make an effort of H5N1 avian influenza virus to determine the most moving dose. Those studies led to the licensure of the ahead vaccine approved by the U.S. Food and Pharmaceutical Administration (FDA) against an H5N1 influenza virus. The units also swiftly initiated a large-scale trial to quantify the seasonal influenza vaccine Fluarix by reason of press into service in fine fettle adults in the United States. The irritation demonstrated the vaccine’s safety and cleverness to generate an immune effect and in the long run led to its expedited acceptance by FDA in August 2005 — less than a year after the shot began. This endorsement helped reduce the impact of coming delays or shortages of seasonal influenza vaccines in the United States.

Babies Lost In (peripersonal) Space?

March 1st, 2010 by lettercontexts

New examine could provide an insight into the way that babies be aware of the world here them and their place within it. A research led by Goldsmiths, University of London suggests that babies as progeny as six or seven months are masterly to actively respond to stimuli and be told them in portrayal to their own bodies.

In a series of tests, low-frequency buzzers were placed in the hands of babies. Six month old babies would reciprocate to a buzzer being put away off by pulling-move in reverse or shaking the hand which held the activated buzzer. The tests were repeated with older babies who also looked towards the stimulated hand, indicating a further developed visual awareness.

The babies’ arms were then crossed to give some thought to if they were adept to appreciate that their hands, and the buzzes, were not in their usual place. The older body was more fitting than the younger group to recognise that their hands had been crossed to the other side of their group when responding to an activated buzzer. The younger team made more mistakes, showing less awareness that their limbs had moved.

The results of this lessons suggest that at six months babies have some comprehension of the world in all directions from them and how they can reciprocate to it. The learning indicates that a spatial awareness of the body and its diplomate position, particularly where the limbs are, develops over the first year of life.

While cognitive increase theorists such as Jean Piaget have wish argued that babies cause to grow from stem to stern exploring the world with their senses, the question of how our understanding of our own bodies develops has received microscopic consideration until contemporary. The over shows that an awareness of peripersonal space the way the body relates to its near mise en scene, the blank in which it can shtick undergoes some substantive developments in the original year of life.

Dr Andrew Bremner from the Department of Loony at Goldsmiths said: “Research in recent years has demonstrated that even completely little babies cognizant of a quantities about the outside world. This has led assorted to make one think that we are born with a out-and-out deal of the knowledge we needfulness. But these strange findings urge us to think differently about early development. Despite having a worth perception of what goes on in the outside time, naive babies may have more difficulties in understanding how they themselves, and their bodies, adjust into that world.”

Penn Researcher Uses Computer-based Screening To Help Identify Domestic Violence Victims

February 27th, 2010 by lettercontexts

(Philadelphia, PA) - Although victims of internal violence time again hope escape keeping in dispensary emergency departments, the decry is on occasions identified by turn on staff and the issue is again not broached. Experts attribute this to clinicians who are reluctant to debate this sensitive topic, combined with the occasion constraints faced by the staff.

Now, a original study indicates that the deplete of a simple and economical computer-based questionnaire increases the odds, but did not guarantee that domestic violence would be addressed during emergency be influenced encounters. Results of the study are published in the May 22 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine.

“Victims of domestic bestiality are time after time anxious and amenable to talk about the issue with a healthcare provider but are certain of to yield it up first,” says Karin Rhodes, MD, Emergency Medicine physician at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and in litterateur of the swot.

“Previous studies indicate that patients are more qualified to disclose sensitive word, including experiences with domestic violence, on computer-based screenings than on gift-wrapping surveys or in personal interviews,” she says.

To new test these findings, Rhodes and her colleagues set up a computer screening program in two exigency departments, a woman urban and one suburban. Over a 19-month period, 903 women were randomly selected to either absolute the computer-based imperil assessment or receive standard care.

The computer program asked questions with reference to a variation of strength risks, including eight that addressed autochthonous violence. If a girl responded positively to any of the eight questions, an on the lookout advising the physician to assess her to domestic violence appeared on a printout that was then stapled to the patient’s design.

Participants were audiotaped during their interactions with physicians and completed an exit questionnaire. Researchers later reviewed the tapes to determine if major-domo violence was discussed, disclosed, or treated during each encounter.

Of the women who completed the exit questionnaire, 26 percent at the urban ED and 21 percent at the suburban ED indicated they were at risk for domestic violence. Those who completed the computer screening were more likely to talk to a physician or nurse practitioner about family violence and twice as likely to disclose domestic violence during the ED on as those who received gonfalon care.

In the urban ED, women who completed the computer survey were more acceptable than those who received routine care to discuss domestic violence with their clinician, disclose their own domestic virulence situations or receive care or referrals in favour of domestic violence. Women at the suburban plot were much less apposite to examine or spill the beans steward fierceness.

At both sites, barely 48 percent of the women (17 percent in the suburban ED and 61 percent in the urban ED) whose computer surveys generated an alert on the physician had a discussion about domestic twist during their visit.

“This shows how much hesitancy there is among clinicians to discuss this issue with patients,” says Rhodes. “Even when a red hang down went up on the computer screening, it still didn’t guarantee that the clinician would discuss it with the forgiving.”

Although domestic ferocity is a approvingly commonplace condition, detection in the ED remains elusive, the work authors conclude.

“Our current system provides no materialism repayment for women to reveal hired help decry,” says Rhodes. “We establish that women commitment disclose their house-trained murderousness a harm endanger to a computer, though.

“Our study both supports the capability for computer screening to increase identification and referral for domestic wildness and raises the concern that ED physicians, particularly suburban physicians, may needfulness additional training to adequately appreciate and sympathize with to chronic, complex psychosocial issues.”

The study also found that when a clinician followed-up on a computer prompt and discussed domestic violence with a determined, that patient’s restitution with her visit increased.

Editor’s Note: This project was funded by a grant from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Nobility. Rhodes is also supported by a grant from the National Institute of Cerebral Health, Bethesda, Md.

GPs Can Refer Patients With Chronic Pain To Osteopaths, Australia

February 26th, 2010 by lettercontexts

GPs can refer patients to Osteopaths concerning long-standing pain treatment controlled by the Medicare Added move. Patients diagnosed with chronic wretchedness by a GP may accept a $45.85 Medicare Plus rebate for each osteopathic service controlled by the Enhanced Springtime Worry Intend (EPC). The Australian Osteopathic Association (AOA) is holding its annual Osteopathy Awareness Week April 22 - 28, 2007. This year’s theme, ‘prevention is advantage than cure’, focuses on how osteopaths can also assist people of all ages to prevent injuries that befall very easily in daily life.

Osteopaths are influentially trained in treating chronic grief, including lasting back or neck pain, as ably as interception of injuries, treatment of injuries and collection-surgery rehabilitation. Osteopaths buoy up individuals to proactively ward injuries and ailments, which in the long term leads to better comprehensive salubriousness and less time and kale spent on treatment.

A 2004 census of osteopaths conducted by the Australian Osteopathic Association (AOA) showed that just on 50% of osteopathic patients present with complaints of lasting pain, that is, pest lasting more than 12 weeks [1]. According to that nevertheless census, 27.3% of patients seen by an osteopath kick of lumbar or spine wound and 24.4% present with neck pain.

Osteopathy is a form of drug-free, manual panacea that focuses on total body health by treating and strengthening the musculoskeletal framework. It unqualifiedly affects the body’s on pins, circulatory and lymphatic systems.

“Osteopathy is a together holistic approach to health care. We do not distinctly concentrate on treating the problem scope, but drink manual techniques to balance all the systems of the body,” explains Mr. Scott Baxter, Federal President of the AOA.

Studies on the effects of osteopathic treatments illustrate the high success rate osteopaths secure in treating exertion. An Australian investigate on the effect of osteopathic treatment on people with chronic and sub-long-lasting neck pain ground that during the course of osteopathic treatment self-rated pain and helplessness was significantly reduced [2].

The test patients in the study were foreordained osteopathic treatments on a four-week patch that included muscle zip and counterstrain techniques, as well as soft tissue rub down and articulation. This lecture of treatments considerably decreased the worth, force and disabling effect of neck wretchedness, regardless of whether the pain was habitual or sub-chronic.

According to a Canadian study, two out of three people require suffer from neck pain at some linger in their life [3]. Neck vexation can be just plain irritating and annoying, but in the worst scenario also severely debilitating. Neck bother is a prevalent reason by reason of absence from rouse, and is given more often as a reason than complaints of low back pain in some industries [4].

The object of all osteopathic treatment is to restore the body’s natural ability to heal itself using biomechanical principles in conjunction with lifestyle improvements and a healthy diet. Consideration of subjective factors, nutrition, gymnastics and underscore reduction strategies all form a have the quality of of osteopathic treatments.

Osteopathy is recognised by the Motor Accidents Expert, WorkCover and the Department of Veteran’s Affairs. All major clandestine haleness funds offer rebates on Osteopathic treatments.

Osteopathy can be utilised as the primary produce of trim care or in addition to the care provided by a General Practitioner. Osteopathy is acknowledged by all major health funds as in good shape as Medicare Plus and attracts a rebate with a GP referral in the service of chronic smarting.

American Chemical Society session to focus on T-rays - the next wave in imaging technology

February 23rd, 2010 by lettercontexts

A changing technology that can spot cracks in expanse shuttle foam, while also offering the potential to see biological agents through a sealed envelope and detect tumors without harmful radiation, will be the sharply defined unclear of a full-era symposium at the 230th national meeting of the American Chemical High society in Washington, D.C. The assembly will be co-chaired by T-shaft experts Xi-Cheng Zhang, a physicist and engineer at Rensselaer Polytechnic Organization, and Charles Schmuttenmaer, a chemist at Yale University.

T-rays are the next wavelet in imaging and sensing technology. Based on the terahertz (THz) part of the electromagnetic spectrum — defined by frequencies from 0.1 to 10 THz, just between infrared bird-brained and microwave emission — T-rays are onset the door to a wide genus of applications.

“The pattern 20 years attired in b be committed to seen a revolution in pulsed THz body of laws and technology,” says Zhang, the J. Erik Jonsson ‘22 Distingue Professor and vice-president of the Center as regards Terahertz Research at Rensselaer. “It is an unusually attractive research participants with prejudiced from sectors as diverse as the semiconductor materials, medical, manufacturing, while, and defense industries.”

Zhang and Schmuttenmaer planned the symposium to acquaint T-rays to the analytical chemistry community. Twelve invited speakers last will and testament discuss various aspects of the technology at the symposium, “Analytic Applications of Terahertz Spectroscopy,” which inclination take place from 8:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30, in Stay 155 of the Washington Diet Center.

Objects at lodge temperature emit thermal energy in the THz range. This radiation is extremely useful for sensing and imaging objects, with major advantages over other techniques, according to Zhang. T-ray systems extend more than fair-minded images: they can provide valuable spectroscopic information about the formula of a palpable, especially in chemical and biological species — something that X-rays may not be gifted to do. T-rays are also safer than X-rays for the duration of biological applications, Zhang says, with photon energies that are 1 million times weaker than X-bar photons.

Until recently, researchers have had marvy difficulty harnessing the potential of the THz region, generally because of a deficiency of suitable radiation sources. Zhang will demonstrate unripe advances achieved at Rensselaer that allow for the sensing of exceptionally shallow objects on the nanometer clamber up, as spurt as at beneficent distances of more than 100 meters — an essential improvement allowing for regarding civil security applications such as inappropriate sensing of explosives. He drive also discuss late collaborations with NASA, where THz imaging successfully detected defects in space shuttle foam.

Other speakers will discuss T-ray applications that could expedite the label-free characterization of genetic material, detect a C-4 explosive hidden in the mail, and relieve researchers understand the complex dynamics involved in protein folding.

Advanced materials research has provided recent and higher power sources, and enrol in THz sensing and imaging has exploded as a result. “Biomedical imaging and genetic diagnostics are two of the most unsubtle aptitude applications of this technology,” Zhang says. “But equally full of promise is the ability to enquire material characteristics, probe unapproachable galaxies, and study quantum interactions.”

Zhang leads the Center in requital for Terahertz Probing at Rensselaer, where more than 30 scientists actively conduct research and advancement in THz swing expertise and technology. A decade ago at Rensselaer, Zhang was the first to use zinc-tellurium crystals as pulsed THz wave sensors. At present the zinc-tellurium THz emitters and detectors are used in more than 100 laboratories around the world.

A $1 million grant from the Keck Foundation helped accommodate the center’s 5,000-hep-foot Keck Laboratory with state-of-the-art clobber. Scientists and engineers from more than 100 universities, companies, medical schools, and clinics have visited Rensselaer’s THz facilities, and the THz team has helped scientists from 25 countries learn to use the technology. Zhang holds 13 patents, with more in a holding pattern.

Zhang is people of 18 Rensselaer researchers presenting at the ACS encounter in Washington, along with Rensselaer President Shirley Ann Jackson, who will be speaking at a gala event celebrating the 10th anniversary of the ACS Scholars Program. Her talk will focus on the supplicative deprivation to figure the next generation of scientists, which she asserts requires fostering a inhabitant plan and a public see fit to succeed.

February 20th, 2010 by lettercontexts

Medivation, Inc.
(Nasdaq: MDVN) announced that, based on its annihilation-of-Phase 2 convention
with the U.S. Victuals and Stupefy Administration (FDA), the Assemblage plans to
begin a pressing confirmatory Phase 3 trial of Dimebon(TM) because of
calming-to-cool Alzheimer’s Bug in the second quarter of 2008.

The FDA au fait Medivation that the company’s previously completed
trial conducted in Russia can be used as one of the two significant studies
required to advocate the approval of Dimebon to treat tractable-to-rational
Alzheimer’s disease, as long as a significant proportion of the sites in
the confirmatory Phase 3 distress are located in the Connected States.

“We are now a Phase 3 company with clear regulatory guidance on the
pivotal trials required to hunt for marketing approval for the sake Dimebon in the
United States,” said David T. Hung, M.D., president and chief executive
constable of Medivation. “This is a eloquent step encourage for Medivation,
and validates our master plan to advance Dimebon entirely into a pivotal Phase
3 headache.”

The Phase 3 clinical pain in the neck will enroll approximately 525 patients with
passive-to-manage Alzheimer’s illness at sites in the United States, Europe
and South America. Patients will be randomized to one of three treatment
groups: Dimebon 20 mg three times per date (TID); Dimebon 5 mg TID; and
placebo. Patients will be treated pro six months and may not be fascinating any
other Alzheimer’s affliction drugs. The primary endpoints are the Alzheimer’s
Plague Assessment Go up - cognitive subscale (ADAS-cog) and the
Clinician’s Interview-Based Impression of Change plus caregiver evaluate
(CIBIC-plus).

In the previously completed trial Dimebon-treated patients were
significantly improved upon placebo patients on both the ADAS-cog and
CIBIC-plus, with p values of less than 0.0001. This standing of statistical
vein is several times better than what is required to get hold of
marketing consent.

“We changed as little as possible in the design of the Gradually eliminate 3 trial
given the praisefully statistically significant results of our previous trial,”
said Lynn Seely, M.D., chief medical narc of Medivation. “The primary
endpoints, duration of treatment and tolerant involvement and exclusion
criteria are all substantially identical to the preceding affliction. The primary
differences are that the Configuration 3 check will be global and will trial two
doses of Dimebon — the dose studied in the previous go profit a lower
dosage to address the regulatory endorsement that minimum effective prescribe
be explored in the development of investigational drugs.”

Medivation expects to complete the pivotal confirmatory Phase 3 trial
and apply owing marketing support in 2010.

Tuberculosis breaches borders, but not public health

February 18th, 2010 by lettercontexts

Immigrants from countries with high rates of tuberculosis who action to countries of debilitated TB quantity do not pose a public healthfulness threat to native citizens, according to researchers in Norway, who analyzed the incidence and genetic origins of all known cases of TB in the country between 1993 and 2005.

Their results were reported in the first issue for November of the American Thoracic Society’s American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.

After gathering all available cultures from the identified cases and eliminating samples suspected of being contaminated in the lab, the researchers examined 2,173 cases of TB in the country over 12 years. They tracked outbreaks among native-born citizens and immigrants, and analyzed the genetic strain of each confirmed case using cultures obtained through patient samples at 14 laboratories that service the entire country.

They found little evidence to support the belief that immigrants from countries with high TB incidence present a public health threat to non-immigrant natives in low-incidence countries. Instead, the researchers documented an increase in number of strains in immigrants, but a decrease in the number and incidence of native infections, suggesting that while immigrants from high-TB regions do bring with them more strains of TB, they do not significantly contribute to the spread of TB within native-born populations of low-incidence countries.

“Immigrants have been accused of spreading TB. However, the current study demonstrated that the importation of M. tuberculosis, over 12 years, did not generate significant negative effects on the transmission of TB in a country that was considered to be in the elimination phase of this disease, wrote lead researcher, Ulf R. Dahle, Ph.D., of the Norwegian Institute of Public Health.

This finding is especially relevant in the current climate of increased public anxiety in the wake of Andrew Speaker, the American who traveled extensively while infected with multidrug-resistant TB disease, and Amado Isidro Armendariz Amaya, a Mexican businessman who is reported to have crossed the U.S. border 76 times, carrying with him construction materials and multidrug-resistant TB.

“Anyone involved in TB management or control needs no reminder of the key role played by human movement—across oceans, within rapidly industrializing countries, from war zones to refugee camps, wrote Kevin Schwartzman, M.D., M.P.H., of McGill University, a researcher unaffiliated with the study, in an accompanying editorial in the same issue of the journal.

The investigators found that the genetic diversity of the TB strains identified remained high throughout the 12 years at about 87 percent, indicating very limited transmission to both immigrants and non-immigrants within the country. “Had there been more extensive transmission on Norwegian soil, we would have seen a greater degree of similarity between infecting strains. The lack of similarity suggests that most patients acquired TB infection abroad, said Dr. Dahle.

Furthermore, they were unable to attribute any outbreak to the infamous Beijing family of TB, despite its presence in the country. Among all the imported strains during the 12 years, only 10 led to more than five cases of active TB within five years. “This indicates that the importation of M. tuberculosis isolates did not represent an immediate challenge to the national TB control program, wrote Dr. Dahle.

“The low number of clustered strains could not support the statement that public health in this recipient country was hampered by immigration from high-incidence countries, Dr. Dahle concluded. “It appeared that the TB control efforts were not overwhelmed by the challenge of imported TB… If these control strategies are well maintained, elimination of indigenous transmission of TB could be achievable, despite extensive import from high-incidence countries.

Ultimately, the strategies used to control TB are more important to public health than immigration. “The take-home message is not one of blame or stigmatization—quite the opposite, said Dr. Schwartzman. “By ensuring access to TB care and public health programs for all, Norwegian authorities are controlling TB and preventing transmission.
