The Long Goodbye (1973)

Robert Altman cleverly updates the exploits of classic hard-boiled gumshoe Phillip Marlowe who ferrets out a daisy in the City of Angels circa 1974. Particle has changed since the noirish 1940s where murder is concerned, but contemporarily Marlowe is a wise-cracking cynic who deals with coke-addled, brown-worshipping suspects and nudist neighbors. Funny, suspenseful, and agreeable, THE BIG GOODBYE features an early unbilled appearance by Arnold Schwarzenegger and an unforgettable live portrayal by Elliott Gould.
